Particle Size Selection Of Road Marking Glass Beads

The particle size of glass beads for road marking construction is generally between 12 and 100 meshes, and the following factors should be considered in the selection of glass beads.

1.     The influence of drying time of marking paint on the glass beads sedimentation.

Generally, glass beads with larger particle size should be selected for marking lines with fast drying time, because it can sink into paint faster, whereas glass beads with smaller particle size should be selected for marking lines with slow drying speed.

2.     Shelf time of marking line

Durable marking line not only requires more glass beads to be dropped or mixed, but also requires a larger range of glass beads sizes in construction. On the contrary, non-durable markings, such as those with a service life of less than one year, not only require a relatively small amount of glass beads, but also require a narrower particle size distribution range of glass beads.

3.     Bonding effect between glass beads and marking materials

Glass beads with too small particle size are easy to be blown away by the wind in construction, while glass beads with too large particle size are easy to fall off prematurely by external forces such as wheel rolling in use.

Glass beads with larger particle size, such as those with a diameter of 1~2.5mm, are usually used in marking materials with good bonding effect to glass beads, such as two-component road marking paint. Theoretically, only when the diameter of glass beads is 2/3 embedded in the road marking, glass beads can be well fixed on the marking paint. When the part of glass beads exposed on the surface is more than 1/2, the glass beads are easy to fall off from the marking.
