Test Method Of Glass Beads Refractive Index-Immersion Method
Aug 22,2022

Immersion Method

1. Take a few reflective glass beads and place them on the groove of glass slide, then immerse the glass slide into the liquid with a known refractive index.

2. Put the glass slide on the microscope stage, adjust the condenser to the maximum setting, turn the microscope aperture to maximum, and turn on the microscope light source.

3.Move a black board with a straight edge with a size of about 10cm*10cm under the condenser, and through the heliostat, one half of the visible area can be observed to be dark and the other half bright.

4. Observe with reference to Figure 1 to determine the refractive index of the glass beads and the liquid.

5.Repeat the above steps with liquids with different refractive index until a liquid with the same refractive index as the glass beads is found, or two liquids with similar refractive index are found, and the refractive index of the glass beads is between the refractive index of the two liquids. The refractive index of liquids can be measured with an Abbe refractometer and corrected to 20℃. The refractive index of commonly used liquids at 20℃ is shown in Table 1.

Judgement Method

It's more better to purchase a microscope connected to a computer digital display, so that the test results can be observed more clearly, as shown below:
