Test Method for Refractive Index of Glass Beads




Immersion Method

1.      A few glass beads are placed on a fluted slide and immersed in a liquid with a known refractive index.


2.      Place the fluted slide on the microscope platform, adjust the condenser to the maximum setting, set the microscope aperture to the maximum, and turn on the microscope light source.


3.      Move a blackboard with a straight edge of about 10cmX10cm under the condenser. Through the eyepiece, one half of the visible area is dark and the other half is bright.


4.      Compare with Figure 1 to determine the refractive index of the glass bead and the liquid.


5.      With a liquid with a different refractive index, repeat the above steps until you find a liquid with the same refractive index as the glass bead, or you find two liquids with a similar refractive index, and the glass bead has a refractive index between the two liquids. The refractive index of the liquid can be measured with an Abbe refractometer and corrected to 20 ° C. The refractive index of commonly used liquid at 20℃ is shown in Table 1.
